Live Simply – Winter newsletter 2019

Living Simply

It is time to keep our feet flat to the floor in the drive to reduce levels of single-use plastic. Each of us can make a difference by avoiding products encased in single-use plastic. We must also maintain the campaign momentum pressing Government and manufacturers to address this issue and to rationalise household recycling systems countrywide to ensure that more is recycled and less goes to landfill. Pursue all opportunities to support this and contact our local MP to ask him what’s happening.

Encourage butterflies in your garden.

Gardeners will already be thinking ahead to their Spring and Summer gardens, hopefully using the winter months to plan sustainably. If you use pesticides in your gardens, look for more environmentally-friendly ways of tackling problems that will allow important bugs and bees to flourish. Devise planting plans that will encourage wildlife into your garden; be an untidy gardener; encourage your neighbours to do the same so that environmentally-friendly corridors can be created for butterflies and bees. We need them.

Live In Solidarity

2018 ended with the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign reporting that HSBC bank, under pressure from boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaigners, had decided to divest from Israeli Defence Contractor Elbit Systems, a producer of drones and chemical weapons among other things. It’s a step in the right direction but HSBC continues to support businesses involved in military equipment manufacture. At the same time, as a country, the UK sells arms to those making war in countries such as Yemen, where we are witnessing man-made famine on an appalling scale. Could not our manufacturing expertise be redirected to produce something more beneficial to the world – or are weapons too profitable?

Traidcraft Update

Traidcraft’s Board approved a plan in November to stave off closure of the flagship fair-trade retailer. The organisation is slimming down from 67 to just 12 employees with the intention of maximising profitable parts of its business, phasing out loss-making lines, creating a membership culture and setting a new high bar for ethical trading in the UK. See full press release here: https://www.traidcraftshop.co.uk/traidcraft-update

The Justice and Peace Group will explore ways of engaging with the organisation going forward.

Pope Francis

Compassionate and loving God,
you created the world for us all to share,
a world of beauty and plenty.
Create in us a desire to live simply,
so that our lives may reflect your generosity.

Creator God,
You gave us responsibility for the earth,
a world of riches and delight.
Create in us a desire to live sustainably,
So that those who follow after us
May enjoy the fruits of your creation.

God of peace and justice,
you give us the capacity to change,
to bring about a world that mirrors your wisdom.
Create in us a desire to act in solidarity,
so that the pillars of injustice crumble
and those now crushed are set free.
Amen.

LIVE SIMPLY SO THAT OTHERS MIGHT SIMPLY LIVE

Living Simply

Levels of food waste in the UK continue to be a scandal, costing around £20 billion annually. All UK supermarkets have made a “transformational” pledge to halve food waste by 2030. In total 90 retailers, manufacturers, producers, hospitality and restaurant chains across Britain have signed up. This is not just a corporate problem, as individuals we must play our part. Buy sensibly, use up leftovers creatively and freeze food where you can. Do you have any other tips on limiting food waste? Please let us know.

While there’s real momentum behind various campaigns to address plastic waste, it’s important to maintain pressure. The Greenpeace campaign to eliminate pointless plastic encasing supermarket products asks shoppers to take a photo when they spot excessive plastic packaging and via Twitter to tweet the photo using the #PointlessPlastic hashtag and naming the supermarket. Other social media channels can be used on the same basis and/or email the photo to Greenpeace at packaging.uk@greenpeace.org

Busting some Fairtrade Myths – no.3. Only a small percentage of the price we pay for a Fairtrade product goes back to the farmer.

The Fairtrade Foundation (www.fairtrade.org.uk) advises:

Not so. The retail price consumers pay is determined entirely by the retailer. The way Fairtrade works is that the producer organisation receives the Fairtrade price at the point where they sell to the next person in the supply chain (usually an exporter or importer). This is intended to ensure farmers can cover their costs no matter how low the world price for their commodity falls. Always look out for the Fairtrade brand – and resist the move by some retailers to switch to untested alternative schemes.

Traidcraft – fighting for survival

Traidcraft, the organisation which sells the best of fair trade, runs life-changing development projects and campaigns to bring about trade justice, is struggling. Poor trading performance has led Traidcraft plc’s Board of Directors to close loss-making operations. At present Traidcraft UK is trading as usual and has launched an attractive autumn craft collection produced by artisans worldwide. While the company focuses on its future, supporters are urged to continue to shop online at https://www.traidcraftshop.co.uk/ and to share thoughts about their future mission at lovetraidcraft@traidcraft.co.uk
