LIVE SIMPLY SO THAT OTHERS MIGHT SIMPLY LIVE
Rugby Unwrapped and Dave Kerruish – two routes to vastly reducing the amount of packaging associated with your weekly shop. As you may have read, Rugby Unwrapped is an initiative launched by friends Sharon Lee and Clair Saxton. They have set up shop in Church Street (opposite HSBC bank) offering a range of dried foods, spices and cleaning products which can be popped into your own bags, containers or reusable bottles depending on the product. Dave Kerruish sets up shop weekly (Thursdays 8am-4pm) in the hall next to Rugby Baptist Church in Regent Street. He also sells dried foods loose and cleaning product refills plus fresh veg, herbs, wholemeal bread etc. Active support will help both ventures.
Well, holiday season is upon us and doubtless some air travel may be involved. It may not be feasible in the time available to get the family away in a more environmentally-friendly way but, where possible, think about taking trains, cycling or walking rather than flying or travelling by car. Also, locally, look out for information about Transition Towns. It’s a topic now being discussed in Warwickshire with some people pushing for Rugby to embrace and encourage the community-based approach to a more environmentally sensitive way of living, especially at a time of exponential housing growth. Did anyone attend the Transition Town event at St Andrew’s Church in May? If so, let us know what you think. https://transitionnetwork.org
Live In Solidarity
Our tendency when thinking about “living in solidarity” is to think about those living in much poorer nations than ours and how we might help them by backing initiatives which promote proper rewards for products and labour. But we should also look closer to home exploring initiatives to help homeless people in Rugby (Hope4) and to put food on family tables (Rugby Foodbank). Sacred Heart parishioners are already committed to both causes but our help is needed year-round. Thank you.
Compassionate and loving God,
you created the world for us all to share,
a world of beauty and plenty.
Create in us a desire to live simply,
so that our lives may reflect your generosity.
You gave us responsibility for the earth,
a world of riches and delight.
Create in us a desire to live sustainably,
So that those who follow after us
May enjoy the fruits of your creation.
God of peace and justice,
you give us the capacity to change,
to bring about a world that mirrors your wisdom.
Create in us a desire to act in solidarity,
so that the pillars of injustice crumble
and those now crushed are set free.
