1. Compassionate and loving God,
you created the world for us all to share,
a world of beauty and plenty.
Create in us a desire to live simply,
so that our lives may reflect your generosity.
2. Creator God,
You gave us responsibility for the earth,
a world of riches and delight.
Create in us a desire to live sustainably,
So that those who follow after us
May enjoy the fruits of your creation.
3. God of peace and justice,
you give us the capacity to change,
to bring about a world that mirrors your wisdom.
Create in us a desire to act in solidarity,
so that the pillars of injustice crumble
and those now crushed are set free.
In this season of resolutions and promises, we have the perfect opportunity to review different aspects of our lives and recommit ourselves to living Simply. What personal resolution could you commit to for the next 12 months?
Act in Solidarity
An informal information-sharing network “Refugees Welcome in Rugby” is being launched later this month. The intention is to put in place a support network for refugees from Syria being settled in Rugby and elsewhere in Warwickshire. Rugby Borough Council has liaised with private landlords to honour a commitment under the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme to provide homes for refugees. A meeting to launch this network is being held at Rugby Quaker Meeting House on Wednesday 25 January 2017 at 7.30pm. Expert speakers from Warwick University and Coventry & Warwickshire MIND.
Recycle Christmas Cards – Marks and Spencer has worked with the Woodland Trust since 2008 on a card recycling scheme collecting over 60 million Christmas cards which have helped the Trust to plant over 60,000 trees. So gather up those cards, drop them into the box/sack at Sacred Heart and we will take them in bulk to M&S. NB: Remember that cards containing glitter cannot be readily recycled, so please just glitter-free paper.
Waste disposal is a major cause of soil, water and air pollution and takes up valuable land space. In Rugby we’ve been encouraged with black, blue and green bins to dispose of our waste responsibly. Rugby Borough Council’s proposals to charge for emptying Green bins seems likely to lead to a greater proportion of garden waste being deposited in black bins and being sent to landfill instead of being rotted down into compost which the council can use itself or even sell. It’s not too late to lobby local councillors to think twice before imposing this cost. Added to the environmental cost in landfill terms and the additional car journeys some may make to the tip to avoid the charge, there’s also the disproportionate impact on those who can least afford to pay – either to have the council dispose of this waste or have someone take it to the tip for them.
