Living Simply – Waste Not

Statistics on how much each of us wastes from food to energy to other consumables are alarming.  So, the phrase to keep front of mind this quarter is “don’t waste”. Set yourself a target to drastically reduce the amount of waste being consigned to your blue, black and green bins – you’ll know you are making progress when that goes down.

Scrunchy and stretchy... Sainsbury’s shoppers should be aware that you can now recycle stretchy plastics such as bread loaf wrappers, which cannot go into your blue bin, in special bins at the supermarket. The bins gave way to carol singers at Christmas but should be back now – if not ask Customer Service why not. And foil recyclers be aware that foil needs to be scrunched into tennis-ball size pieces to be recycled successfully. Smaller pieces may not be captured by recycling machines.

WRAP, the Waste and Resources Action Programme, has reported on the outcome of a four-year pan-European programme to tackle sustainable clothing and influence positive action in the entire supply chain, under the title “Driving circular fashion and textiles.” If you are a fashionista or just buy clothes occasionally it is worth checking out their report which looks at pilot projects by manufacturers to recover and turn fibres into new garments through remanufacture, seeking to reduce use of virgin materials, conserve water and energy and reduce amounts going to landfill or incineration. The initiative also saw a number of European brands and retailers run pilot schemes to source more sustainable fibres to reduce the impact of clothing produced and sold within the European market.

Pope Francis

Compassionate and loving God,
you created the world for us all to share,
a world of beauty and plenty.
Create in us a desire to live simply,
so that our lives may reflect your generosity.

Creator God,
You gave us responsibility for the earth,
a world of riches and delight.
Create in us a desire to live sustainably,
So that those who follow after us
May enjoy the fruits of your creation.

God of peace and justice,
you give us the capacity to change,
to bring about a world that mirrors your wisdom.
Create in us a desire to act in solidarity,
so that the pillars of injustice crumble
and those now crushed are set free.
