RESPONDING TO POPE FRANCIS’ CHALLENGE

livesimply prayer

pope-francis_2541160b1. Compassionate and loving God,
you created the world for us all to share,
a world of beauty and plenty.
Create in us a desire to live simply,
so that our lives may reflect your generosity.

2. Creator God,
You gave us responsibility for the earth,
a world of riches and delight.
Create in us a desire to live sustainably,
So that those who follow after us
May enjoy the fruits of your creation.

3. God of peace and justice,
you give us the capacity to change,
to bring about a world that mirrors your wisdom.
Create in us a desire to act in solidarity,
so that the pillars of injustice crumble
and those now crushed are set free

In Solidarity – Fairtrade Fortnight 27 February – 12 March 2017

FairtradeA reminder that in the forthcoming Fairtrade Fortnight, insofar as is possible, Sacred Heart parishioners are asked to select Fairtrade products when purchasing items for Rugby Foodbank. Supermarkets generally now stock decent ranges of Fairtrade products, just look for the Fairtrade symbol. http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/

Live Simply

cafod-live-simply-009Food waste: It seems inevitable now that Rugby Borough Council will vote to charge residents to have their green bins emptied in future. Doubtless many people will consign food waste to their black bins but perhaps this is an opportunity for those of us who don’t do so already (and have the room) to consider composting. It’s also time to become aware also of how much food we waste and resolve to limit this as much as possible.

Tip: Shop with a list to avoid buying more than you need or what you don’t need.

Tip: Fresh and freeze – if a proportion of fresh produce isn’t going to be eaten, can you freeze it for use later?

Waste App:

Rugby MP, Mark Pawsey is working with Sainsbury’s to trial a “waste app” – keep an eye on how he gets on

Live sustainably

Energy: Recent news of one energy supplier planning a major price hike may have caused many of us to consider switching, so what better time to look into making a “green” choice and considering a supplier with a strong commitment to renewable energy.

costa_3478294b.jpg (620×387)Take-away coffee / tea cups: Publicity around the fact that most take-out hot drink containers cannot be recycled has prompted some major chains to try to respond. Be aware and encourage those who do respond to the challenge.

The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.
